What the Typing Teacher Needs to Know

You may encounter problems involving short attention span, impulsiveness, hyperirritability, destructiveness, "acting out," and other aberrant behavior in the student with learning disabilities. If the student is distractible, his or her attention will not remain focused for a reasonable length of time, and you will need to prepare short, succinct lessons. (It is often helpful to take a piece of light cardboard and cut out a horizontal strip the length and width of a line of type in the textbook so that the student can see the lesson one line at a time.)

The important thing to remember is that these students frequently lack gross or fine motor coordination, directionality (up-down or right-left), and the ability to sequence a series of motor responses. Thus individualized instruction may be required before such students learn to strike the keys or the space bar properly.

LEARNING DISABILITIES

Students with learning disabilities exhibit a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using spoken or written language. These disorders may be manifested in problems with listening, thinking, talking, reading, writing, spelling, and/or performing calculations.

Learning disabilities include conditions that have been referred to as perceptual handicaps, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, developmental aphasias, etc. The term does not include learning problems that are due primarily to visual, hearing, or motor handicaps, or to mental retardation, emotional disturbances, or environmental disadvantages.

In brain injury (often referred to as neurological impairment), there is damage before, during, or after birth in one or more areas of the brain. The student may have motor or language difficulties, seizures, or mild intellectual dysfunction.

Additional Program Information

Students with learning and reading disabilities will benefit from the visually-cued, split-screen approach used in the interactive computer tutorial, "K
eyboarding for Individual Achievement" - Learning Disabled Edition.

This unique tutorial gives students the security and confidence they need to acquire keyboarding skills at their grade level.

We understand that some individuals may not want programs by grade level.   Therefore, we have also included a Standard "Keyboarding for Individual Achievement" Learning Disabled Edition that does not focus on any particular grade level.

The split-screen approach provides immediate reinforcement for learning disabled students because their performance on the lower screen is sequentially monitored on the upper screen. This greatly reduces frustrations associated with any reading problems they may have.

You are able to automatically time and grade your students using the one, three, and five-minute speed tests included in the program. In addition, you have access to a printed record of all exercises. This provides both you and the parent with an accurate record of the student's progress.

The lesson plans and instructional goals, which are individually designed for each student, enable you to fulfill and adhere to the mandates of your Individual Education Plan (IEP).

The tutorials and the typing books are available in Elementary, Junior High, and High School editions. The Teachers' Edition includes all grades (1-12).

The Teachers' Edition allows you to select the grade level range appropriate for your students. This means that when the Level Button on the Main Menu displays 'Elementary', all the typing lessons and speed tests will be on grade levels 1-6. If you use the High School level, all the typing lessons and speed tests will automatically be changed to grade levels 10-12.

An unlimited number of students may use the program, which means you can have more than one student set up at one computer station. A site license is available to allow installation to every computer at your location.
